What else does school mean? School pictures! I'm running my annual Better School Picture Day. Get a picture that you actually want to hang in your house! Not only that, it'll be burned to a disk so you can make all the copies you need for a fraction of the cost.



This year Better School Picture Day is even hitting the road.

On Monday, September 6th from 9-11 AM I'll be at the Pioneer Park gazebo to photograph your cute kids! I'll spend 5 minutes per kid and you'll end up with 3 images burned to a disk that I'll mail to you. If you'd prefer, I can also just email the images. Cost is $30/kid and you'll get a copyright release so you can make your own prints.

Like most portrait photographers in Spokane, I shoot at Manito Park a lot. A LOT.

But the one thing I haven't shot there is a wedding. And I've always wanted to.



Joe and Caren didn't get married at Manito, but they did ask me to meet them there for some pictures in their wedding finery and it was really lovely.



We wandered around three of the gardens in the park and found all sorts of great places for wedding pictures.



It was a beautiful night and really the perfect time of year for the flowers.

He even humored me and sat on this nasty couch that was on the side of the road destined for the dump.



He was also my virgin shoot on my new camera. Canon 5d mark ii, baby!

For the final project for my photo class, I had everyone just shoot for 2 weeks. Whatever they wanted. They uploaded the images to a flickr gallery and I and a couple of my photographer friends did the judging.

It was a hard choice, but we narrowed the choices down to 5 and then picked a winner from those.

In no particular order....










And the winner was....

Shannon!


This just goes to show that a camera does not a photographer make. Shannon was the only one in the class with a point and shoot and she did beautiful work all along. The lighting in this image is gorgeous and I love the mixture of the light with the dust. I love that it's unposed and I love the composition and the way she cropped it.

You know how you try really hard not to have a favorite kid but secretly, deep down inside, one of them is your favorite?



The same thing happens at photo shoots. Sometimes one of the kids in a family just captivates me and I find my camera going to that child over and over and over.



Especially when she's so dang cute. And posey. And sweet. And fun.



She might make you have conversations with your husband that go like this.

"Da-ave! Look how cute she is! I want one!"
"What?"
"An Ethiopian baby. Can I have one? Please?" *bats eyes*
"What?"
"Look!"
"Oh, she is cute." *walks away*.....*comes back later* "Tell you what. If we feel like we're supposed to have more kids, AND you can't get pregnant, AND we can afford it, we'll adopt from Ethiopia."

I won, right? Pretty sure he agreed somewhere in there.



She does have siblings. That's her brother up there helping her show me how old she is.

He's cute too. He liked the rocks.



She has two darling sisters.





Parents, too.

Andrea did a great stopped action water skiing picture. I love that the droplets are all frozen in place! Also great composition.


Doug did a cool zoom exposure of a clock.


And Rebecca T. did a great picture of her son with the hose. Great light, composition, and a nice, slow shutter speed to get the water to move into the lines instead of stopping in place.

Betina's cute daughter and her kissy face. I love that her lips are the only thing in focus.


Rebecca's nest and eggs. She says she risked life and limb for this shot. I think it was worth it!

So, without further adieu, I present to you week one's photos of the week. The assignment this week was ISO. High and Low.

Shannon's Daisy. Love the way the light blasts through the petals and the slightly abstract quality. Great focus and color.


Rebecca's wildflowers. Nice depth of field and composition. You didn't let anything distracting get into the image and you used the rule of thirds with the focused flowers.


Richelle's courthouse. Great exposure for a night shot. The lights add a lot of depth to the image. Good composition too.

The kind of shoots I do seem to come in groups. The last 3 were maternity and today's was really fun! It was pouring rain out and I really hoped it would keep pouring at least through the beginning so we could get some shots outside.

I had so much fun on this shoot! My neighbor graciously agreed to let me use her stunning back yard and gardens for some of the pictures and I about died when I saw this cute little buddha back there. It was perfect.



We also took a quick drive to one of my favorite locations and the light was perfect!





Jade brought her friend (and my cousin!) with her for the pictures and since they're only a week or two apart with their due dates, she hopped in a couple pictures too.

I've had many requests to teach a class that's more substantial than the one hour classes I've taught for various groups.

The course will focus on understanding your camera, understanding exposure/light and shooting in manual mode. It will be very hands on and there will be an assignment each week that you'll bring in so we can offer constructive criticism. This little guy is the son of a graduating law student. He was born on Monday, we did pictures on Friday, his dad graduated on Saturday and they got in the truck and started driving right after graduation!



Busy first week of life, for sure! (as a side note...this clock was knocked off the wall and broken by my kids right after the shoot. Guess I won't be doing this pose again any time soon)



He needed a little down time. Not that baby pictures can really be considered down time...but he was a trooper.



I know his family from church so I was really excited to get to meet him before they moved! I was also excited that he was the first baby I've gotten to tolerate the hanging pouch thingy. (courtesy of the talented Tricity Hokes Creations!) Thanks to his Auntie for helping to hold him up.

Ja'Nette and Ryan are two of my very favorite people to photograph! I was at their wedding, their sealing, and everything in between and after, including new baby pictures for their cute girls.

This time Ja'Nette's family was in town for the baby's blessing so we did family pictures.

Miss Mia is at the age where it's more fun to run away from the photographer, but I managed to woo her anyway.



We did the group, the generational and every other combo we could think of.







Ja'Nette's sister and her husband are both in the military and heading oversees soon.



Ja'Nette's brother just got back from Afghanistan.



and Grandma was a riot!
